Mountain Dew Kickstart PineApple Orange Mango
The Mountain Dew brand originated in Knoxville, Tennessee. The original formula of the soft drink was invented in the year 1940. This was done by Barney and Ally Hartman. This first formula did very well, but could be improved. No sooner said than done, in 1958 Bill Bridgforth made sure the recipe was refined here and there. The rights to this renewed formula were purchased by the Tip Corporation of Marion in Virginia. The Mountain Dew formula was further perfected, and so the third version already of the popular soft drink was marketed in 1961. On August 27, 1964, the rights of the entire brand Mountain Dew became owned by the Pepsi-Cola Company. This acquisition ensured that the soft drink was immediately exported to all regions of the United States, including those where it was not previously available.
Some variations on the original soft drink of Mountain Dew
Between 1940 and 1980, there was only one version of the original Mountain Dew available on the market. It was citrus flavoured. In subsequent years however, it soon became clear that there was a demand for a variant with less sugar. Because the brand Mountain Dew wanted to cater to its clients wishes, a special 'Diet' version was introduced in 1988. Another variant appeared around this time in the form of the Mountain Dew Red. It did not end there, the Mountain Dew brand was determined to become a lasting competitor for other, established brands of pop. For example, in 2001, they marketed a variant with cherry flavour.
The Mountain Dew logo
When PepsiCo obtained the rights to Mountain Dew in 1964, it was proposed very soon to modernise the logo. Nevertheless, it had to partially remain faithful to the original character of the brand. No sooner said than done, in 1969 an adapted logo was made that was to appeal to a younger generation. The logo did quite well, and was therefore kept until 1996. The following years, new logos would be introduced at regular intervals. Each time, the goal of the new logo was to be more generation appropriate. It is also remarkable that some soft drinks of this brand have been given specific logos over the years, that distinguished them from the other variants in the selection.
